Not long ago we told you about how parameters can help us improve our visualizations in Tableau. In addition to the introduction of dynamic parameters introduced in the 2020.1 version, Parameter Actions were introduced some time earlier. As we know, these allow users to modify values within a parameter.

When it comes to spectacular visualizations, it’s impossible not to mention the Flerlage brothers, Kevin and Ken. The two Tableau Zen Masters have worked on so many examples of Parameter Actions.

Minefield on Tableau
Tableau Zen Master Joshua Milligan has reproduced one of the most famous vintage games on Tableau. Thanks to Parameter Actions, “the sky is the limit” on Tableau!
Changing the chart type
In this example, Parameter Actions were used to allow the user to choose between different types of graphs to view. The author, Keith Dykstra, has built a dashboard that is simple in its design, but allows us to look at the same data from different angles.
Using a parameter built to allow you to change the type of graph in the visualization, Keith Dykstra shows the distribution of sales broken down by customers using a scatter plot, by city using a map, and finally by product subcategories using a bar graph.
Multiple selection with Parameter Actions on Tableau
This example comes from Tableau Zen Master Marc Reid. Here the dashboard author made creative and original use of Parameter Actions, combined with synthesis metrics and reference lines.
In his work, he manages to give an overview of the main indices of centrality and dispersion.
