Web Data Connector in Tableau: Facebook

One of the features that makes the difference today when choosing a Business Intelligence tool is its ability to connect to a large number of different data types (here are those available on Tableau today: https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/it-it/exampleconnections_overview.htm).

In addition to traditional connections, Tableau allows its users to create Web Data Connectors (WDCs) to extrapolate data available on the web. Specifically, WDCs are nothing more than an HTML page and Javascript code, capable of making accessible web data extracted from APIs or, more generally, from any URL.

In the past, Visualitics had already created an ad hoc Web Data Connector for the extraction of Coronavirus data to be analyzed in Tableau.  This latest connector allows you to extract metrics directly from your Facebook pages.

In order to accomplish this, the team customized the code base that Tableau makes available to its users (https://github.com/tableau/webdataconnector) to meet the security requirements that Facebook requires when using its API.

The connector, which requires to be at least Editor of the page you want to analyze, allows you to extract data organized in 2 tables:

  • Facebook page insight. containing metrics related to the performance of one or more pages of which you are an administrator or editor;
  • Facebook post insight that instead allows you to extrapolate data regarding the performance of your posts.

In addition, the connector allows for data mining:

  • until the last two years of history;
  • On issues related to clicks, engagement and impressions;
  • Aggregate daily, weekly and monthly on your page and life time on your posts.
